A Little Advice

Hi new friends! Remember me? I’m Ali from Around the VeggieTable!

I want to talk to you today about compromise. I know many of you are brides and wives (sorry Dani but I don’t think you have a ton of male readers…) and so I think it’s only fitting we talk about something so crucial to marriage! I have only been married 73 days, but I know that compromise is the glue that holds a marriage together.

One of the biggest compromises that occurs in our household is the movie selection. I’ll be the first to admit that I have terrible taste in movies. I want to watch the same five or six movies over and over (counting Harry Potter as one, of course). My husband, on the other hand, has amassed an enormous collection of blu-rays and DVDs…and they’re all boy movies. You ladies know what I’m talking about. There are way too many car cashes, zombies, and ninjas for my liking.

Most of the time I let him pick the movie. It’s not that I don’t want to watch Legally Blonde again, it’s just that I know that watching Resident Evil will make my husband oh-so-happy. So we compromise. I let him pick the movie…and I get to pick what’s for dinner.

Yes friends, as the resident chef here I get to select what we eat for dinner most nights. If it were up to him, we would eat Taco Bell every single day. Don’t get me wrong, I love me a bean burrito, but for the most part I want to eat healthy meals that won’t double my waistline. We are both so much healthier because of this compromise, and that makes us both happy.

Being married means that you often have to look at the bigger picture. It makes me so happy to do something that I know makes my husband happy, and I know he feels the same way about me. I think that’s what marriage and family is all about. So here’s my advice to all of  you: In life, and in marriage, when issues arise, ask yourself one question:

Would I rather be right or happy?

If you ask yourself that simple question, you empower yourself to let the little things go. Don’t let the little things become big things. Compromise!

And since you were all such good sports about listening to my advice, how about if I give you something that you and your guy will both enjoy?

Spiked Basil Lemonade

Ingredients (for one refreshing summer cocktail):

1.5 ounces limoncello
4 ounces seltzer water
4-5 fresh basil leaves
1 slice lemon

Muddle basil with lemon slice, then top with limoncello, seltzer water, and ice.

Dani, I hope you are having an amazing time on your adventures! I can’t wait to hear about all the fun you’re having, and possibly get your thoughts on this. Don’t worry about your husband, we are taking good care of him 🙂
