I had the privilege of being involved in two surprises this weekend!! Last week I got a call from my friend Nick saying he was going to do it. He was going to propose to his girlfriend. And then I got a call every single day for the rest of the week to work out plans and details and tell Nick to calm down. Nick wanted to propose at the Walters and he wanted me to photograph it. So, we worked out a plan. On my way to Elle’s surprise birthday party, with Frank sitting in the car with me, I called Rachel and vented about how my assistant had just canceled on me for a shoot (which none of my assistants would ever do) and that I couldn’t think of anyone else such short notice to assist. I told her all she would have to do is hand me lenses and make fart noises over my should to make the kids laugh during the family session. She asked if are you serious and do you think I am capable of doing this? To which I giggled in my head and said, of course she could do it.
The next morning came and I picked up Rachel (and Nick because he convinced Rachel to ask me if he could come too so they could hang out at the museum after the shoot). I also had the ring because he had it at his dad’s house and he didn’t have time to go all the way to Frederick to pick it up so I got it and had it in my backseat waiting for him.
So with Rachel sitting in my front seat, and watching Nick through the rear view mirror, we pull up to the Walters and Nick heads off. I pretend to test my lighting with Rachel modeling in the courtyard area, I especially love the photo of her gesturing towards the naked sculptures in the background moments before Nick shows up and proposes.
We celebrated with a few more photos outside on the square before they got on with their festivities for the rest of the day.

I’m based in Maryland, DC and Northern VA but don’t worry, I LOVE to travel.
I love me a new passport stamp.
